Keeping a Confidence

There are some things that we need to be able to share with another person, knowing that he or she will keep it in confidence. When we have trustworthy friends like that, we can share our burdens and know they will keep them secret from others and pray for us. However, when a confidence is broken, it causes a very deep hurt.

The Lord inspired this wisdom for us to consider. (Proverbs 11:13) A gossip goes around telling secrets, but those who are trustworthy can keep a confidence. This shows a fundamental difference between people. Some people can keep a secret, while others can't. We need to discern this quality in those we know.

It seems like it gives some people a thrill to be able to share some information that not everyone knows. It makes them feel important. They may think that others will like to talk with them more, if they know these special facts. However, the opposite is true. Wise people will stay away from people like that.

People respect those who can keep a confidence. They know they are trustworthy. They feel secure in their presence, and they rest easy knowing that they would never say something to hurt them. We all should strive to be that kind of friend and confidant. This quality makes us valuable to God and to others.
