Choices

As Christians, we have been set free to make the choices that direct our lives. We are no longer slaves to sin, under the control of the world, the flesh, and the devil. As we put our trust in Jesus as our Lord and Savior, God by His grace forgave our sins and set us free to live the abundant life. However, that means we have choices to make every day. Where will we go, and what will we do? What will be our priorities, and how committed will we be to accomplishing them? We have to decide. Jeremiah was in a similar situation when the Babylonians took over Jerusalem and let him out of prison. (Jeremiah 40:4) The king's servant told him he was setting him free from his chains. He could go to Babylon with him, and he would take care of him there. However, if that seemed wrong to Jeremiah, he did not need to go any farther. The whole land was before him, and he was free to go wherever seemed good and right for him to go. Yes, we, as believers today, have to make the same choice.

Life is comprised of all of the choices we make. Each choice has consequences, and those consequences affect our future choices. Therefore, we must choose wisely, or we can get off track, even though we are God's children. So, how do we choose what is good and right for us? Of course, we have the Bible, God's Word to guide us. It shows us about 95% of what is good and right for us. All we have to do is to read it and obey what God has given us there. For all of the other choices that are not explicitly spelled out for us, we make decisions based on God's character, what would Jesus do? Also, we pray in faith asking for God's direction, and the Holy Spirit directs us in the way we should go and what is right for us. Sometimes, He uses other mature believers to help us, and He even engineers circumstances to show us the way, as we pray. In any event we must look to the Lord for us to make the correct choices, because He is the One who has a plan for our lives, and we are to follow His plan, not ours.
