No Backward Looks

The Christian life is described as a race in the New Testament. If you have ever run in a race, you know that it is not good to look back when you are running. If we look back, it slows us down, and we are in danger of being tripped up. If we want to win the race and finish well, we must keep our eyes on the Lord and on our destination, which is heaven. Jesus admonished His disciples and the other who heard His teaching by telling them, not to procrastinate and not to look backwards. (Luke 9:62) We can't stop looking toward God's kingdom, and take a break to do other things. We must seize every day we have to live and live it for the Lord.

We all have a tendency to procrastinate, as I have said before, and as we have heard Jesus say in the Bible. However, it is especially sinful if we look back to the way we lived before we came to know the Lord. When we look back, we quit making progress in the Christian life. We revert back to the ways of the flesh, instead of being filled with the Spirit. We decide we are good enough, so we can put off our spiritual growth until tomorrow. That is never possible. We are always growing to be more like Jesus, or falling farther away from His image. That is why we have to stop looking back. We have to be zealous to seize every day and make the most of it for the Lord. Why would we want to do anything else, when we can draw near to the Lord and do His will, as we get closer to the Judgment and heaven every day?
