Dabbling in the Occult

The word "dabble: is an interesting word. Not many people use it anymore, but it has two main meanings. The first meaning is to immerse your hands or feet partially in water and move them gently. The picture is to just barely touch the water, not being immersed fully. The second meaning is built on this. It means to "take part in an activity in a casual or superficial way." We dabble in things at times, and we do not give it much thought. God told Moses to give us a strong warning against dabbling in the occult or trafficking in mediums. (Leviticus 19:31) This is very important for all of us to heed, since it has serious consequences.

Sometimes we dabble in the occult, and we do not think about what we are doing. This happens when we read our horoscope "just for fun" or "out of curiosity." The Lord makes it plain that depending on the stars for the future is of Satan, not Him. We must stay away from it. Another way we can dabble in the occult is by doing anything that has to do with demons or witchcraft. Some people think it is fun to read books or watch movies with Satanic activities or to read about casting spells. That is dabbling in the occult, especially when we begin to think there is something to it. Finally, there are those of us who even go to mediums or fortune tellers. We might have a seance just for fun, or we just want to see what our fortune would be. God said not to do any of that, because if we do it will pollute our soul. That sounds serious to me. Believers should not want any of those filthy things to get mixed in with our clean souls. We must focus fully on the Lord. He is the Only One who knows our future, and He is the One to go to with any questions we have about our lives.
