Devote Yourselves to Prayer
How devoted are we to prayer? God commands us to be devoted to prayer, but what makes it so hard for most of us? (Colossians 4:2) The truth is that prayer is hard work. It takes discipline and time. Many of us are so busy we fail to set aside the time to prayer. At other times, we just do not realize how important it is. It has been said that until we have prayed, we can do nothing. I tend to agree with that statement, because Jesus told us that without Him we could do nothing. Therefore, we must depend on Him continually in prayer. Let's see what Paul received from the Lord for us in this verse.
We must devote ourselves to prayer. That includes our time and energy. We must not give prayer our left over time, but our best time and energy, because of how vital it is. Prayer is having an honest conversation with God about everything in our lives. It is seeking His will, not ours, and it is being committed to doing what He says to us. Therefore, as we pray, we stay alert to what He is saying and what He is doing around us and in response to our prayers. Just like Jesus told Peter, James, and John in the garden, "Watch and pray." Then, as we pray, we must be filled with thanksgiving and pray in an attitude of thanksgiving. We can always be thankful that God is in control. He is All-Knowing, All-Powerful, and All Loving, so He never does the wrong thing. When we pray like this and have an ongoing conversation back and forth with God, we can see His work done in and through us for His glory and for His kingdom to be built up.
Tomorrow, I intend to read I Thessalonians 1-3.
