Hezekiah's Unselfish Prayer

When the king of Assyria came to take over Jerusalem in the days of Hezekiah, it seemed hopeless. However, King Hezekiah had the faith to go to the house of God and to pray for the Lord to deliver them. That prayer is a good model for us, because it was an unselfish prayer. He prayed for God to deliver them, "that all the kingdoms of the earth may know that You alone, Lord, are God." (Isaiah 37:20) God answered that prayer. I pray that we would learn to be unselfish in our praying.

Prayer should not be about us, but about the Lord. It should not be to get our way, but to bring glory to Him. We should spend more time praising and thanking Him than we do asking for blessings for ourselves. We should pray for others more than we pray for ourselves. After all, we are not telling God what to do, or even what we think is best for Him to do. We are praying for His will to be done. Then, we should want God to be glorified and others to come to know Him in all of the answers to our prayers. If He heals us, we should use it as a testament to His love and power, so others will come to Him. If we receive the provision for what we need in a miraculous way, we should tell it, so all will know He alone is God, the Lord of the universe. That is what prayer should be about.

Tomorrow, I intend to read Isaiah 40-42.
