Pretending to be Something We Aren't

After Rehoboam took the throne when his father, Solomon, died, he lost the 10 northern tribes because of his harsh answer to their inquiry, and he led the people of Judah into sinful practices. Because of this, God punished him by sending the king of Egypt with his army. They took the treasures of the house of the Lord and the king's house. They took the gold shields that Solomon had made at the height of his kingdom's wealth. Rehoboam did not want people to know that he was poor and powerless, so he made bronze shields, and they brought them out when the king came, so they could pretend everything was alright, and Rehoboam could pretend to be rich and powerful, like Solomon. (I Kings 14:27) When we pretend to be something or someone we are not, we may be fooling others for a while, but we can never fool God.

It is never good to pretend to be someone we aren't, because that keeps us from seeking the Lord and His solution for what we need. If we pretend not to be sad, we will keep being sad. If we pretend to be rich, we will just get poorer. If we pretend to be powerful, we will run into someone with real power, and they will put us in our place. Instead of pretending, we need to admit what we are and who we are. We need to be honest with God and with others. Then, we can receive the grace and mercy of the Lord to help us be what He designed us to be. It will enable Him to send others to help us, too. Please, remember that we do not improve anything by pretending, but when we humbly admit our need, we can receive help.

Tomorrow, I intend to read I Kings 15-17.
