A Mind To Work

It is simply amazing what God's people can accomplish in His power when they work together with one mind. In Nehemiah's day they were able to rebuild the walls of Jerusalem in a very short period of time. The reason for their success was that the people "had a mind to work." (Nehemiah 4:6) This is a valuable lesson for us as individuals, churches, and other Christian organizations.

Some people have a negative attitude toward hard work. They want to work a little and get paid a lot. There are not many jobs like that. Then, when it comes to the Lord's work, it is even more difficult. Often, the work consumes hours of our time, and the workers are volunteers. Nehemiah's workers did not receive a salary. They worked on the wall to achieve God's will and to build the city they loved. Today, we should have a mind to work, because we are doing all that we do "as unto the Lord." We should be willing to work hard for long hours, because we love the Lord and His church, and because we want to see the Kingdom of God built for God's glory.

Think about it. When we come to the end of our lives, what part of our work is going to have lasting meaning? Truly, it will only be the work that is done for the Lord and His kingdom. Therefore, we should have a mind to work every day.

Tomorrow, I intend to read Nehemiah 6-9.
