The Last Invitation in the Bible

The Bible is a remarkable book, because it is the very Word of God. It is amazing how it all fits together, and it does not contradict itself, even though God used 40 different men to write it down over a 1,500 year span of history. However, the most remarkable thing to me is that over and over again from Genesis to Revelation, God calls for all people to turn to Him for salvation. Here in the final chapter of Revelation is the last invitation to come. (Revelation 22:17) Take a minute and contemplate this invitation.

This invitation comes from the Holy Spirit and the Church, which is the Bride of Christ. No one can be saved without the Spirit calling them. Here the Spirit is calling along with the church. Isn't it a wonderful privilege to work along side of the Spirit to call people to eternal life? All believers need to be diligent about this task.

The call to come goes out to two groups: those who hear and those who thirst. Everyone hears the Spirit, because He speaks to the heart of every person born into this world. Also, everyone thirsts, because without God, we have a thirst that can never be quenched. However, once we come to Christ, we never thirst again, since He meets our deepest needs.

Finally, the invitation is given to "whoever" desires. Anyone who desires to know Christ and to have eternal life may come and take of the water of life freely, because salvation is by grace through faith for all people. On this last day of the year, if you have never come to know Christ, please heed this last invitation of the Bible. Come today.

Tomorrow, I intend to read Genesis 1-4.
