A Sure Mark of Spiritual Maturity

Job was a very mature believer. One way we can see his spiritual maturity is by his control of his tongue.(Job 27:3,4) Job had grown in his faith to the place where he could be sure that he would not speak wickedness nor utter deceit. Only a strong believer can accomplish that. James 3:2 assures us that we all sin, but if anyone does not stumble in word that person is a perfect or mature person, able to bridle the whole body.

Some people discount words. They do not think they are that important, when in reality, our words are a picture of our heart. Jesus told us that whatever is in our heart comes out in our words. Therefore, if we want to give ourselves a true test of our spiritual maturity, we will examine our words. If we are able to keep from using bad language no matter what happens, and if we are able to speak the truth no matter what happens, we are a mature believer. This shows that our hearts are set on the Lord and doing His will so much that we would not think of using corrupt speech or trying to lead someone in the wrong way with our words.

I hope that we all will give ourselves this simple test of spiritual maturity by taking time to reflect on how we talk and what we have said. It will definitely show us a lot about ourselves.

Tomorrow, I intend to read Job 28-31.
