Joseph Wept

I can't imagine the flood of emotions that filled Joseph's soul when he saw his brothers for the first time, when he revealed himself to his brothers, and when he was reunited with his father.(Genesis 46:29) In each case the Bible tells us that Joseph wept and not just a little. Tears are for sadness, joy, and just to release all that has built up within us. God knew what He was doing when He gave us the ability to cry. Tears are good.

Those of you who know me are aware of my propensity for crying. It is a regular part of my life. Some would say that it is not "manly." I disagree. There are some things that require a "good cry." It is the only thing that helps to cleanse the soul and to allow us to express what is in the deepest recesses of our hearts. Please, do not try to hold in your emotions. When our emotions are conformed to God's emotions by the power of the Holy Spirit, they are sacred, and we should embrace them fully.

Joseph wept, and so should we, because we all get hurt, and we all receive healing when we trust in the Lord. We all go through separations, but we have those glorious reunions. We all have sadness, but it only makes the rejoicing more grand. As the song writer said, "Tears are a language God understands." People understand our tears, as well, because they allow them to see into our soul, to see our passion, our hurts, and our relief. I have to wonder about a person who doesn't weep. What kind of heart is not lifted that high or has not fallen that low? However, one day the Lord will wipe every tear from our eyes, and we will enter eternal bliss with Him, so that we can express our joy fully to His face in our songs of praise. Until then, I'm with Joseph.

Tomorrow, I intend to read Genesis 47-49.
