Godliness with Contentment
What do a lot of the non-believers (and even believers) in the world say is the key to a successful, happy life? I have not taken a survey of them, but judging from the media there is a definite philosophy. That philosophy is to live it up and to get all of the material pleasures that you can. In fact, you can't ever have enough pleasure or money. Just try to get more and more of both until you die. What a sad philosophy! What an empty life!
The opposite is actually the truth. Godliness with contentment is great gain. (I Timothy 6:6) God's plan for success starts with being godly. Then, it is completed by being content with what He gives us. Godliness is often the opposite of earthly pleasures, but it has its own satisfactions, which are more lasting and rewarding. Then, contentment is a foundational element for having peace. It is really the only way to fully trust God. We trust that He knows what is best, and He loves us enough to give it to us.
What is your plan for the good life? Is it closer to this world or God's Word? If you have been pursuing the way of this world, and it is not working, why not try the Lord's way? You can't do it half heartedly, but once you give it all to the Lord Jesus, it is the right thing to do.
Tomorrow, I intend to read Jeremiah 12-14 and II Timothy 1.
