The Unselfishness of God - Psalms 91-93 and Romans 15:1-13

God has more reasons to be self-centered than anyone, because He is the All-powerful, All-knowing, All-loving Creator of the universe. However, He is not selfish and arrogant. He is unselfish. When He does call on us to worship Him as the Almighty God, it is for our good, because that is reality. It is not for His ego. He gets His pleasure from helping us, providing for us, and relating to us. The psalmists who wrote these three psalms emphasize the unselfish care of the Lord over His own. He wants us to live in Him. He opens Himself to us and says come. He wants us to live close to Him, under His wings. He delights in sending His angels to care for us. He is always faithful to us. He loves to cause us to bear fruit in our lives. That is the goodness of God toward us. He even wants to do those things for those who reject Him, but He can't because He would be rewarding their sin, and sin causes death. Therefore, His severity toward the wicked is even for their good, to turn them to Him.

God wants us to live in that same unselfish love as we relate to others. Romans 13 makes that clear. We are not to think of ourselves but others. We are to seek unity that comes from the Lord. We can't do this in our own power. We must be changed by the Lord Jesus and empowered by His Spirit to have His unselfishness. Then, we can have the unselfishness that would die for others, who did not even believe in Him. The Jews can come to love the Gentiles and desire them to be saved. God can cause us to look at how we can help and serve others rather than ourselves. If we do that, He will take care of us, and we will be truly happy, because happiness is the by-product of doing the right thing, and it is right to care for others.

Tomorrow, I intend to read Psalms 94-96 and Romans 15:14-33.
