Seeking Light from the Lord - Job 17-19 and Acts 10:1-23

Job was grieving over his losses, and he wanted to know why all of those things had happened to him, since he was blameless before God. That does not mean that he had not sinned, but when he had sinned, he had confessed it to God, so that God had forgiven him. Therefore, Job was seeking answers. He was seeking light from God about his situation. He was not getting any light from his friends, because they assumed wrongly that his suffering was due to sin. Therefore, Job had to keep listening to them, but crying out to God. The good thing about seeking light from the Lord is that He will always send the light we need. The bad thing is that He will send it in His timing, and He will not answer all of our questions, just the ones He knows we need to have answered. This causes us to trust Him more. We do not need to know everything God knows. We need to trust His love and His wisdom. Later on, we will read about how God comes to Job to give him light, but until then, Job will have to wait on the Lord for that light.

Cornelius was a Roman who was seeking light from the Lord. He was a God-fearer, who was very devout and prayerful. In God's timing He sent an angel to Cornelius with instructions to send for Peter. This was God's way of giving him more light. At the same time Peter was praying, and God gave him more light, too. He showed Peter that he should not call unclean what the Lord said was clean. Of course, Peter needed that light from the Lord, so that he would preach the Gospel to the Gentiles at Cornelius' house. God sent that light to Peter just in time for the messengers to come, and it was just enough information for Peter to trust God in that situation. That is the wonderful providence of God. He sees the future, and He does the right thing to provide for His own every time. We must come to trust that, and we must be constantly seeking light from the Lord, so we may do His will. We must be confident that when we seek Him, He will send the light we need.

Tomorrow, I intend to read Job 20-21 and Acts 10:24-48.
