God's Power to Defeat Enemies - Joshua 10-12 and Luke 1:39-56

Joshua and the Israelites must have been on a spiritual high, as they saw God working miracles to defeat their enemies in the Promised Land. One king after another came against them, and they defeated each one until 31 kings had been conquered by the power of God. In each case God fought the battle, and God gave the victory. The Israelites knew that. They kept trusting God and following His commands. They saw Him stop the sun and the moon for a whole day, so they could have a complete victory. They experienced victory in the face of insurmountable odds, when a huge multitude of armed warriors came against them. They even saw God defeat the Anakim, who were a race of giant people in the mountains. They saw that there was nothing God could not do, if they trusted Him. What has God done to defeat the enemies in your life? Could you list 31 things God has driven out of your life or 31 miracles you have seen Him do for you, since you came to trust Him? We should be able to make such a list because God is still in the business of defending His children and fighting our battles.

Luke 1 continues the story of Mary as she visits Elizabeth. God defeats the enemy of doubt for both Mary and Elizabeth. Even as Mary enters the house of her pregnant cousin, who is past childbearing age, the baby in her womb jumps, and she is filled with the Spirit. Elizabeth speaks of God's blessing on Mary to be the mother of the Messiah. How did she know about that? The Lord revealed it to her. Why did God show her that? He was defeating the enemy of doubt. He did not want Mary to doubt His ability to do what He had told her. It worked. Mary broke into a wonderful song of faith. She recounted how God had defeated the enemies in the past, and she praised Him for what He was doing for her. Do you have a song of faith in your heart today, because God has defeated your enemies, and He is working great things in your life? He wants all of us to have a song like that and to let it overflow to those around us.

Tomorrow, I intend to read Joshua 13-15 and Luke 1:57-80.
