March 22 - I Kings 4-6

In this passage we read about Solomon setting up his government and building the Temple. It is very instructive for us, if we stop to think about some of the details. Solomon was able to enjoy a time of great peace and prosperity. Everything we read here points to abundance of riches. Part of this was possible because of Solomon's wisdom, but mainly it resulted from David's rule. David defeated the enemies, and Solomon experienced the peace. This is how life works so often. The parents work hard and save their money. Then, the children receive the results, even though they did not have to put forth the effort. This can cause a lack of appreciation for all that we have. It can lead to materialism. This is what happened to Solomon.

Solomon was used by God to build a beautiful gold covered Temple. This would be the place where God lived on earth and where He was worshiped. It was fitting for it to be of the highest quality. However, when God spoke to Solomon in the midst of the building, He said nothing about the Temple. He told Solomon once again to be sure to obey His laws and to walk in His ways. God was much more concerned about obedience. In fact, He even says that obedience was the requirement for His presence. If the people did not obey, He would leave. Then, all they would have is a fancy building. What is a building without the presence of God? We need to remember that today, as we build our church buildings. It is not the building that brings glory to God, so much as it is our obedience.

Tomorrow, I intend to read I Kings 7-9.
